Paris Hilton releases a Linux distro!?!?!?
August 31, 2006 on 6:21 pm | In General | 3 CommentsThis is pretty unreal:
http://bbspot.com/News/2006/08/paris-hilton-tinkerbell-linux.html
“First,” she [Paris Hilton] writes, “I think The Open Source Movement is, like, really hot. I’ve been dabbling with coding for ages, but it’s taken me some time to find the courage to release it. As you know, I’m a shy and modest person, and wasn’t sure if it was good enough for the strict standards of the coding community.”
The article goes on to say:
Tinkerbell Linux is based on Slutware Linux and will be distributed on Paris Hilton’s next music CD entitled “Crontab for Love.” Until then the distribution can be downloaded from http://www.parishilton.com/tinkerbell/
i still don’t quite believe it, especially considering that the link to the distro is non-existant.
Love thy local Open Source developer…
August 26, 2006 on 6:00 pm | In General | 1 CommentHere’s a post i came across via Newsforge:
http://64.71.152.24/index.html
It’s one Open Source developer’s “goodbye, world!” mail, explaining why he’s so pissed off at the FOSS movement that he’s throwing in the towel and giving up writing open code.
Given his arguments, i can’t say i blame him. Both developers and coders can get some good insight into the mind of an FOSS developer by reading his post, and i highly recommend reading it. After all, what happened to him could happen to almost any FOSS developer out there.
Good luck to you, Paul Drain, in whatever it is that you decide to take up next.

The times they are a’ changin
August 20, 2006 on 2:29 pm | In General | 1 CommentFrom the Internal Bureau of Evangelism:
The Election Commission of India has just voted to uninstall Microsoft
Office from its entire workspace and replace it with OpenOffice:
http://www.financialexpress.com/fe_full_story.php?content_id=137833
And they’re wasting no time:
“From September 1, every Election Commission office will have a PC
loaded only with OpenOffice and Mozilla or Opera, the open source
Internet browsers.”
(Though, logistically speaking, pulling it off that quickly will be
really difficult, even for their low number of seats (100).)
U.S. state governments which are trying to mandate such a change are
targetting 1.5+ years in the future (which is still aggressive), and of
course have MS evangelists in the same court rooms fighting them the
whole way.

libs11n porting guide started
August 10, 2006 on 6:34 pm | In General, libs11n | 1 CommentWork as begun on a manual for porting libs11n to arbitrary platforms. It’s brand new and probably far from complete, but it may be of assistance to anyone out there who wants to build libs11n on non-GNU/Linux systems or wants to copy libs11n directly into their own source tree. It’s available here: http://s11n.net/download/#porting_guide
FreeBSD Port of libs11n
August 10, 2006 on 12:59 pm | In libs11n | 1 CommentWhile doing my semi-monthly search for “who’s linking to s11n”, i came across a new FreeBSD port, available via freebsd.org: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/ports.cgi?query=s11n&stype=all
Many thanks to Aaron Dalton <aaron at freebsd org> for adding it to the freebsd project.

s11n 1.2.4 building under Visual C++ Express

At some point i’ll release a zip file containing the project/solution files and source code.
[A few hours later...]
A zip file containing a VCExpress solution file and a precompiled copy of s11nconvert can be found here:

Windows support coming soon…
August 4, 2006 on 11:34 pm | In libs11n | 1 Commenti have accepted a job at a company where i will be developing software solely under Windows. Part of the deal is that i’ve got to have a PC running Windows, because the work is 100% from home (which is really cool). Since i’ll have a Windows PC with development tools (namely MS Visual Studio) i’ll be able to personally support the Windows port of libs11n. It’ll probably be another month or two before i release a port, but it is now officially on the to-do list. If time/energy permits, i will also try to support a Cygwin release.
:)
The company, by the way, is http://www.navigating.de.
